We are eagerly awaiting the decision regarding the authorization for emergency use of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for children, ages 5-11. As you are likely aware, the FDA and CDC will be meeting over the next two weeks to confirm safety and efficacy of the vaccine for this next age group. The vaccine rollout will likely proceed quickly, if approved.

Over the last several months, we have had numerous conversations with our parents regarding the COVID-19 vaccine. Many of our families are eager to vaccinate their children as soon as possible. Others have expressed uncertainty and need for more dialogue. We fully respect these differing perspectives and will continue to work diligently with our families to help make the best choices for their unique needs.

In general, we are very optimistic that the introduction of this vaccine to our younger patients will help to keep them safe and healthy. This will also allow for increased protection for our families and community as a whole. In addition, a return to some degree of normalcy for our school-aged children will surely be welcomed.

In terms of logistics, the Louisiana Department of Health is working to make vaccines available as soon as possible following their approval.  We are currently in close contact with them, working with them to assure availability of vaccine for use at Hales Pediatrics. A familiar setting, especially for our younger patients, would certainly be preferable. Schools and local hospitals will also be included in the effort.

Clearly, this “rollout” is a work in progress.  As we receive more information, we will keep you informed. Please continue to check this site for updates over the next few weeks.  As always, we are available for any questions you may have. ?
